Lieutenant General Niermann recalled a day, three years earlier.

He was seated on a Nartuni ship. Ordvo, the Envoy to Earth and the highest-ranking Nartuni ever dispatched to the planet from the aliens’ homeworld, was discussing the approaching end of the Hundred Year Pact.

And what would follow.

“Of course,” said Ordvo, examining the end of one broad, gold-tipped fingernail, “If mankind is to take to the stars, the old leadership structures will prove dangerous. Man must advance as a united people, and there should be a single point of authority among your race. Your old societies and all their striations produced nothing but war. ‘Nations,’ ‘ministers,’ ‘kings,’ ‘presidents.’ These are the artifacts of the simian troops, which we must never forget you come from. Such concepts are little more than hostile urine markings between rivals. An ‘anathema’—I believe that is the word your people use—to the peace.”

Niermann, seated on a couch of impossible comfort, paused midway through taking a sip of his wine. He placed the crystal glass on a floating pedestal. “I’m ready to assist with any such concerns, Ordvo.”

Ordvo folded his hands. “Good. I am glad you will be sufficiently cooperative.”
